My Stock Trading Blog Is Online

Well, it took over a month, but last night I launched my Stock Trading Techniques blog (see http://www.stocktradingtechniques.com/). It is running on my own host using WordPress blogging software. The host and WordPress have been flawless the entire time.

Where I did have problems was with the templates (see I Finally Resolved My Template Problems). When you install WordPress you try to select a template that gives your blog a “theme” that is taylored to a look and feel that is intended to promote the message your blog is trying to convey.

Templates support “plugins,” which are pre-programmed functions you can selectively install to enhance your bog (most are free). Different templates and plugins work together in different ways. The template I used had some bugs, mainly due to old versions of plugins that came with the template and because of some configuration problems I made due to my lack of knowledge about the plugins I was using.

Once these were resolved, I had other customization to do. Being a former computer programmer, I thought I could figure out how to do this on my own, but I eventually relented and started reading documentation (as they say, when in doubt, read the directions). Some of the customization was difficult to figure out because it required inserting code into the template in places that were not obvious to me. Some things I tried just plan didn’t work.

Upon further research, I would discover that some areas I was trying to implement custom code were places where code could not be executed. This mostly was due to my lack of knowledge, but I am learning. After dozens of hours of effort and many more of reading, I now feel a bit like a WordPress guru, at least a first level one.

I now have two commercial blogs (not counting this one, which is mainly a diary) and one web site. I make money from my web site. My pet health news blog was setup to compliment the web site. I hope to make the stock trading blog a standalone business, just like my online pet food business. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out all my web sites/blogs:
